About the Artist
A native of southern California, Kenneth A. Kinsley has had an artistic journey marked by transitions, each phase influencing the next. Between a stint as a sign-maker during college and a decade-long career as a graphic designer after graduating in 1992, the written word as visual element has been a constant undercurrent in his professional life.
Eventually Kenneth transitioned to a new field, elementary education, and while he continued to draw and paint, it became less and less frequent. Soon, the combination of seeing children’s sense of wonder and exploration on a daily basis, as well as the birth of his twins, re-awakened Kenneth's artistic interests. This also led him to his new position, teaching elementary-level art to students in K-5.
During this time, he slowly began to synthesize previous artistic interests – typography and experimenting with unconventional materials – which has now come to include figuration in the form of a character he dubbed 'Dullard,' whose unfeeling, slack-jawed stare personifies a certain collective mindlessness that seems to rear its ugly head more and more with each passing year. Sometimes paired with Dullard, sometimes taking center stage, is a skull that bears a striking resemblance to our anti-hero. Simultaneously universal, ironic, and tongue-in-cheek, this element instantly lends a means of muddying the rhetorical waters, asking new questions and providing a new context.
